Agency Description:

Sacramento Cottage Housing, Inc. is a private, non-profit agency that was founded in 1995 to provide homeless people, who are struggling with issues of substance abuse, incarceration and other disabilities, with access to high-quality/low-cost housing within a healing community and services to assist residents in their transition from the streets to healthy self-sufficiency.  Program participants are partners in all aspects of the service development/delivery process, self-defining and self-tracking progress toward personal development goals; planning events/activities and representing participants’ interests on the agency’s Board of Directors. General Functions:

The Personal Development Coach (PDC) reports to the Program Director at the community to which (s)he is assigned and is responsible for working with assigned residents to develop and implement strategies and plans which will transition the participants to independent living.  The PDC works with other staff members to ensure the continuation of healthy/therapeutic living environment, including the oversight of on-site workshops, classes, meetings, parenting groups, youth activities, etc.


  • Four-year baccalaureate degree in social work, psychology or related human service field; or CADCII certificate and 5+ years working with un-housed/un-sheltered populations
  • Experience in supportive service role with homeless families or individuals with diverse disabilities and histories.
  • Ability to motivate people, attract resources and generate participant enthusiasm in the learning/growth process.
  • Familiarity with 12-Step programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency; familiarity with HMIS a plus.
  • Ability to pass criminal record and drug test.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and a clean driving record.

  • Calm/constructive manner while dealing with deadlines, problem solving situations, crisis intervention, etc.
  • Willingness to serve as a role model to program participants, engaging and inspiring them to commit to personal growth, self-care.
  • Ability to set and maintain healthy boundaries.
  • Outgoing/flexible demeanor, positive attitude, healthy sense of humor, willingness to learn.
